Building your first deck in the One Piece Card Game can feel like navigating the Grand Line without a Log Pose. With dozens of Leaders and hundreds of characters across six distinct colors, where do you even start?

Thankfully, the core math of deck building in this game is incredibly clean. If you understand the structural anatomy of a deck and avoid a few common beginner traps, you can build a highly cohesive, competitive deck on a budget.
Let’s break down the exact formula, and teach you how to build your first One Piece TCG deck.
How to Build Your First One Piece TCG Deck: The Golden Rules of Deck Building
Before you slide a single card into a sleeve, your deck must legally meet these strict construction guidelines set by Bandai:
Exactly 1 Leader Card: The captain of your deck. Your Leader dictates your starting Life, your Leader-specific abilities, and—most importantly—the color(s) of cards you are allowed to include in your deck.
Exactly 50-Card Main Deck: No more, no less. This includes Characters, Events, and Stage cards.
Exactly 10 DON!! Cards: These go into a separate "DON!! Deck" and act as your turn-by-turn energy resource.
The 4-Copy Limit: You can only include up to 4 copies of any card with the exact same card number. (Note: "OP01-016 Nami" and "OP03-040 Nami" have different card numbers, meaning you can legally run 4 of each in a deck that shares those colors).
Color Lock: Every card in your main deck must match at least one of the colors on your Leader card. If your Leader is Red/Green, your deck can contain Red cards, Green cards, and Red/Green dual-color cards.

The Advanced Lesson: Going First vs. Going Second
One of the biggest mistakes new players make is not building their deck with a specific turn preference in mind.
In the One Piece TCG, you gain 2 DON!! per turn (except for turn one, where the starting player only gets 1). This means your active resources progress in a very predictable pattern:
The 8-Cost Curve Trick: If your deck's primary boss card is an 8-cost character, your deck is mathematically built to prefer going Second.
Going second hits exactly 8 DON!! on your third turn, allowing you to drop your boss right on curve. Going first forces an odd progression, leaving you at 7 DON!! (1 short) or 9 DON!! (wasting 1 resource) when trying to play that same card.
Align your boss cards with your preferred turn progression, and your games will feel infinitely smoother.
