How to Start an LLC: Is it Scary? My Experience on Incfile (Now Bizee)

Starting an LLC sounds intimidating until you actually do it.
For me, the hardest part wasn’t paperwork or fees, it was figuring out where to start, how to start an LLC, and whether I was about to mess something up that would cost me later.

After going back and forth between doing everything myself or using a formation service, I decided to use Incfile, which has since rebranded as Bizee.
This isn’t a hype post or a pitch. It’s simply what my experience was like, what worked, what surprised me, and what I wish I had known before starting.
Why I Didn’t File My LLC Completely on My Own
You can start an LLC yourself through your state’s website. Plenty of people do.
The reason I didn’t came down to three things:
I didn’t want to miss a step or deadline
I wanted a clean paper trail from day one
I wanted something that felt guided instead of overwhelming
At the time, I was already juggling too many decisions. I didn’t want LLC formation to become another mental drain.
Why I Chose Incfile (Now Bizee)
Incfile stood out for a few practical reasons:
The base LLC filing option was advertised as free (plus state fees)
The process looked straightforward
It didn’t feel overly sales-driven compared to some competitors
I wasn’t looking for bells and whistles. I just wanted my LLC formed correctly without stress.
The Actual Process: What It Was Like Step by Step
The process itself was surprisingly simple.
I answered basic questions like:
Business name
State of formation
Registered agent preference
Business purpose (kept general)
Nothing felt confusing, and each step explained why the information mattered. That alone made me feel more confident that I wasn’t guessing.
Once everything was submitted, it was mostly a waiting game while the state processed the filing.
What I Liked About Using Incfile/Bizee
A few things stood out positively:
The dashboard made it easy to see what was completed and what was pending
Status updates helped reduce anxiety
Having a registered agent option built in was convenient
Everything felt organized instead of scattered across emails and PDFs
For someone starting a business for the first time, that sense of structure mattered more than I expected.
The Upsells: Worth It or Not?
This is where you should slow down and read carefully.
Incfile (and now Bizee) does offer upsells:
EIN assistance
Compliance alerts
Operating agreements
Business banking tools
Some of these are useful. Some are things you can do yourself for free with a little research.
The key is not clicking “yes” automatically. Read what each add-on actually does and decide if it saves you time, not just effort.
The Incfile to Bizee Rebrand: Did Anything Change?
From a user perspective, not much changed.
The name did. The branding did. The underlying service felt largely the same. If you see Bizee now and wonder where Incfile went, it’s simply a rebrand, not a different company experience.
What I’d Do the Same (and What I’d Do Differently)
What I’d do again:
Use a guided service instead of filing blind
Take my time reading each step
Keep my business purpose broad
What I’d do differently:
Skip a couple of upsells I didn’t truly need
Prepare my EIN filing myself ahead of time
Better understand ongoing compliance requirements from the start
None of these were dealbreakers, but they’re worth knowing.
Is Incfile/Bizee Worth It?
If you’re comfortable filing everything yourself and double-checking requirements, you may not need a service.
If you want:
Less stress
Clear guidance
A clean starting point
Fewer chances to overlook something important
Then a service like Incfile/Bizee can absolutely be worth it.
For me, the value wasn’t speed or cost. It was peace of mind.
Final Thoughts
Starting an LLC doesn’t magically make your business successful, but it does give you structure and legitimacy. Using Incfile (now Bizee) helped me cross that first hurdle without overthinking it.
If you’re on the fence, my advice is simple: Choose the option that lets you focus on building the business, not worrying about paperwork.
That’s what mattered most to me.
