Wizards of the Coast says the Superdrop contains five separate drops inspired by Bilbo Baggins's journey, although only four currently have complete product details on the official announcement page.

So, what cards are in The Hobbit Secret Lair, how much will the drops cost, and what should you know before August 17? Here's everything Wizards has confirmed so far.

What Is Second Breakfast and Beyond?

This may be the most Hobbit Secret Lair imaginable: Second Breakfast and Beyond contains seven Food tokens, and that's the entire drop. The non-foil version costs $29.99, while the foil version costs $39.99.

For players judging Secret Lairs primarily by reprint value, paying $29.99 for seven tokens may be a tough sell. For someone building a dedicated Hobbit or Food deck, however, that's probably missing the point. This is almost entirely a collector and theme purchase, which makes its appeal unusually dependent on how much you like the artwork and the idea of Hobbit-themed Food tokens.

What Cards Are in Over the Edge of the Wild?

The drop costs $29.99 non-foil or $39.99 foil and feels much closer to the traditional Secret Lair formula. Rather than introducing mechanically new cards, it uses The Hobbit to reimagine existing Magic cards through new artwork and presentation.

Quite a Merry Gathering is particularly notable because it is mechanically Tocasia's Welcome, presented here with a Hobbit-themed name. That makes this drop more interesting for collectors who enjoy Universes Beyond reskins rather than simply alternate artwork on familiar cards.

What Cards Are in Smaug's Spoils?

Like the other revealed drops, Smaug's Spoils costs $29.99 non-foil or $39.99 foil.

This is probably the easiest lineup to understand from a playability perspective. Sol Ring, Lightning Greaves, Thought Vessel and Fellwar Stone are familiar Commander cards, while the Smaug theme gives the collection a natural connection to treasure and the riches beneath the Lonely Mountain.

If you're already playing these cards, the real question isn't whether you need another Sol Ring. It's whether you want this Sol Ring.

That's ultimately the sales pitch behind much of Secret Lair, and Smaug's Spoils makes it especially obvious.

What Cards Are in Desolation?

The drop costs $29.99 non-foil or $39.99 foil. There's legitimate Commander appeal here, particularly with Diabolic Intent and Mirkwood Bats, but this is another case where the artwork and Hobbit treatment are likely to matter at least as much to collectors as the underlying cards.

That distinction matters when judging value. Someone who simply needs playable copies can shop existing printings, while the reason to buy Desolation is specifically to own these versions.

What Is the Fifth Marvelous Mathoms Secret Lair?

We don't know yet, and that's the answer I would trust over anyone pretending otherwise.

Wizards explicitly says A Marvelous Mathoms contains five drops, but its official announcement currently provides complete product sections for only four. There is, however, an intriguing clue about what remains.

Wizards describes the Superdrop's five themes as Second Breakfast, adventures beyond the Shire, Smaug-worthy artifacts, dark things beneath the mountain, and "unseen footsteps" connected to a brand-new foil treatment. The first four descriptions correspond naturally with the four revealed products, which suggests the unrevealed drop may be the one involving that new foil treatment.

That's an inference, not a confirmed card list or product name. Until Wizards reveals the fifth drop, anything more specific would be speculation.

Which Hobbit Secret Lair Looks Best?

Smaug's Spoils is my early favorite because it has the cleanest combination of recognizable cards, Commander utility and a theme that actually makes sense for the cards being reimagined. It's the drop I would examine first if I wanted something that works as both a collectible Hobbit product and a group of cards I could realistically put into decks.

Over the Edge of the Wild becomes more interesting if the artwork and Hobbit reskins are your priority, while Desolation offers the darker side of the story with some legitimate playability underneath it.

Then there's Second Breakfast and Beyond. Seven premium Food tokens for $29.99 will sound either wonderful or ridiculous depending on the collector, and that's probably Secret Lair working pretty much exactly as intended.

Is A Marvelous Mathoms Worth Buying?

Whether A Marvelous Mathoms is worth buying comes down to one question: Are you buying the cards, or are you buying these versions of the cards?

If all you need is a Sol Ring, Lightning Greaves, Cloudshift or another card included in these drops, cheaper versions already exist. Secret Lair is selling something different. You're paying for The Hobbit artwork, themed presentation, unusual treatments and collectible versions of cards you may already own.

That makes A Marvelous Mathoms easier to justify for dedicated Hobbit collectors and themed Commander players than for someone simply trying to build a deck as cheaply as possible. I also wouldn't buy all five automatically just because they're part of the same Superdrop. Pick the drops containing cards, artwork and treatments you actually want.

How Do You Buy the Hobbit Secret Lair on August 17?

The A Marvelous Mathoms pre-queue opens at 8 a.m. PT on August 17, one hour before the Superdrop goes on sale at 9 a.m. PT. To enter the pre-queue, Wizards instructs customers to add a product to their cart and proceed to checkout.

When sales begin at 9 a.m., customers already waiting in the pre-queue are randomly assigned a position in line. Anyone who proceeds to checkout after 9 a.m. enters the queue in the order they arrive.

Most importantly, adding a Secret Lair product to your cart does not reserve it. Wizards says products are secured only after checkout is completed, so anyone planning to buy should have their Wizards account, shipping information and payment details ready beforehand.

Wizards also says single orders over $99 qualify for free shipping, subject to its terms.
