Edgar Markov Is a Werewolf in MTG Reality Fracture, and It’s Too Funny

Reality Fracture has already given us some weird alternate versions of familiar Magic characters, but Edgar Markov becoming a Werewolf might be one of the funniest.

The grandfather of Sorin Markov and the Vampire responsible for creating vampirism on Innistrad has an Echoverse counterpart in Reality Fracture named Edgar, Moonlight Sovereign, and this version of Edgar is a Werewolf instead of a Vampire.

Why Is Edgar Markov a Werewolf in Reality Fracture?

Reality Fracture uses Echoed Pairs, which show familiar Magic characters alongside alternate versions of themselves from Jace's Echoverse.

Edgar's familiar version is Edgar, Ancient Bloodlord, a white-black Vampire Noble. His Echoverse counterpart, Edgar, Moonlight Sovereign, is a mono-green Werewolf Noble.

The change works especially well because Edgar isn't just another Vampire character. In Magic lore, Edgar Markov is the man who created vampirism on Innistrad thousands of years ago while trying to save his people from starvation.

Turning that character into a Werewolf is about as complete an Innistrad role reversal as Wizards could have made.

Wizards has not yet explained the exact history of Echoverse Edgar or how this alternate version became a Werewolf, so there isn't much reason to invent a complicated explanation. Reality Fracture is built around familiar characters whose lives developed very differently, and Werewolf Edgar is another example of that idea.

What Does Edgar, Moonlight Sovereign Do?

Edgar, Moonlight Soverign Reality Fracture

Edgar, Moonlight Sovereign is a five-mana 4/4 with flash.

At the beginning of your end step, if you didn't cast a spell that turn, Edgar gets two +1/+1 counters. He can also spend five mana to put a +1/+1 counter on each creature you control that already has a counter on it.

That first ability feels especially appropriate for a Werewolf card. Magic's Werewolves have historically rewarded players for passing turns without casting spells, and while Edgar doesn't actually use the daybound and nightbound mechanic, the design still plays with the same idea.

It also gives Reality Fracture another Echoed Pair where the alternate version feels meaningfully different instead of simply changing a color or creature type.

Edgar Markov becoming a Werewolf doesn't mean the original Edgar has suddenly changed in Magic's main timeline. Edgar, Moonlight Sovereign is the Echoverse version of the character.

Still, if Reality Fracture was looking for one of the most ridiculous ways possible to show how different Jace's alternate reality can be, turning the creator of Innistrad's Vampires into a Werewolf certainly gets the job done.
